Intention behind the sculpture

The Piglet sculpture was not actually my idea at all. My partner Charles comes from Suffolk, a pig county, and was very keen that I model a family of pigs. When we started showing artwork at large County Fairs like Countryfile Live, I thought the idea of a family of pigs would be a hit. They were originally cast in four colours – bronze, iron, marble and verdigris.

I enjoyed creating three pig sculptures which related to one another. Though happily, I think each one works on its own as well.

When I model animals I try where possible to find examples from life. In this case, I used many, many photos. They helped to show the animal’s anatomical features. Features such as the way its skin lies over its muscles or alters its shape, and their different poses and attitudes.

– Your piglet sculpture raises money for rescued farm animals –

The Piglet sculpture is part of my Charities Range. 10% of the proceeds go to the All Creatures Great & Small animal sanctuary. The sanctuary, based in Wales, operates a programme of rehabilitation and re-homing of injured, abused, unwanted and orphaned farm animals and pets.

If you would like to commission your own pig sculpture, or have an idea for another animal sculpture, I have some information about bespoke sculptures and pricing on my commissions page.

Suitable for indoor display and sized for the window-sill or mantlepiece. The Piglet sculpture is a perfect animal sculpture gift for a special occasion.

Materials Explained

Bronze Resin (known also as Cold Cast Bronze) is made from a polyester epoxy resin with real bronze powder mixed into the surface layer. The final product is patinated (a term that describes the reaction of chemicals with the bronze powder in the surface) to give it a very similar colour to foundry bronze.

Foundry Bronze is made from molten metal using the lost wax method. Bronze metal is a blend of copper and tin along with other metals to give different characteristics to the final product.

Both forms begin as a clay or wax sculpture, from which a mould is taken, but Foundry Bronze casting is a costly and time-consuming process. Cold Casting allows for faster production and a more affordable sculpture.
