HEDGEHOG SCULPTURE

The Hedgehog sculpture was commissioned to sit on a wall of a London home by a lady who’s keen to promote awareness and support for these beautiful animals.

Hedgehogs are able to survive and thrive in people’s back gardens, but only if we are sensitive to their needs. Doing a few simple things can make a big difference for these little creatures. Things like creating holes through boundary fences, to allow hedgehogs the ability to move through and forage in several adjoining green spaces. Or leaving wild patches, where we let insect and beetle friendly ‘weeds’ and plants thrive, and don’t tidy up all the old leaves and bits of rotting wood.

You can leave dishes of water out for them in the hot weather, or provide hedgehog friendly meals, like a dish of meaty cat or dog food. You can even go so far as to provide a shelter in a private spot, to allow hedgehogs passing through to rest undisturbed or even to hibernate through the winter.

Any of these things can really encourage hedgehogs. Our gardens are and can become wonderful homes for hedgehogs. Find information online at websites like the British Hedgehog Preservation Society.

Which Material to Choose

Bronze Resin – bronze metal powder is mixed with a resin to create the appearance of foundry bronze metal, but is more affordable and lightweight.

Foundry Bronze  – refers to the poured molten metal that is cast solid or hollow, depending on size, at a bronze foundry (using the traditional lost wax process). It is more robust and will appreciate in value.

Sculpture Description, Bases & Fixings

This bronze Hedgehog bears Tanya’s signature and unique edition number. Your casting of the hedgehog sculpture will be personally approved and will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

This charming Hedgehog statue is sculpted by artist Tanya Russell, who is well known for her life-like wildlife and animal sculptures. Tanya has a passion for improving the welfare of the animals she sculpts and 10% of all proceeds from the Hedgehog statue will go to the ‘David Shepherd Wildlife Trust’, a charity that fights for greater legal protection of endangered species.

The Hedgehog is an open edition sculpture, and your piece will be a superb recreation of the original bronze sculpture from a mould.

If you would like this statue to be mounted on a stone or wooden base, please contact me for a quote.

How The Sculpture Was Made

The Hedgehog sculpture was modelled in wax, over a steel and aluminium armature for support. After the statue was finished a rubber mould was taken, with ‘keys’ placed in the rubber to ensure proper positioning. Then a shell of fibreglass was applied, to protect the mould and support it during the casting process.
