BABY SQUIRREL SCULPTURE

“I made the Baby Squirrel sculpture for myself to show at my college’s graduate show. I participated in the programme to get back in touch with my own art practice, and at the same time, with all my amazing students returning to The Art Academy! The Baby Squirrel statue was created with a number of sculptures with an animal/nature theme, and the baby squirrel sat inside an oak log displayed vertically on a wall. The squirrel lay amongst a nest of moss and leaves, safe inside a hole within the log itself. The whole piece was showing the amount of life supported by 1 oak tree.”

This sculpture bears Tanya’s signature and unique edition number. It will be carefully gift wrapped and is accompanied by a certificate.

10% of the proceeds from this bronze wildlife sculpture support the ‘David Shepherd Wildlife Trust’ animal charity.

Which Material to Choose

Bronze Resin – bronze metal powder is mixed with a resin to create the appearance of foundry bronze metal, but is more affordable and lightweight.

Foundry Bronze  – refers to the poured molten metal that is cast solid or hollow, depending on size, at a bronze foundry (using the traditional lost wax process). It is more robust and will appreciate in value.

Sculpture Description, Bases & Fixings

This elegant bronze baby squirrel statue is sculpted by artist Tanya Russell, who is well known for her life-like wildlife and animal sculptures. Tanya has a passion for improving the welfare of the animals she sculpts and 10% of all proceeds from the baby squirrel statue will go to the ‘David Shepherd Wildlife Trust’, a charity that fights for greater legal protection of endangered species.

The Baby Squirrel is an open edition sculpture, and your piece will be a superb recreation of the original bronze Baby Squirrel sculpture from a mould.

How The Sculpture Was Made

When I model animals I try where possible to find examples from life. I also use many photos – often hundreds – showing the animal (and other animals of the breed or species). This helps me sculpt their anatomical features. I study the way that hair, fur or skin lies over their muscles or alters their shape, and their different poses and attitudes.

The Baby Squirrel sculpture was modelled in wax, over a steel and aluminium armature for support. After the Baby Squirrel statue was finished a rubber mould was taken, with ‘keys’ placed in the rubber to ensure proper positioning. Then a shell of fibreglass was applied, to protect the mould and support it during the casting process.
