‘BREAKING THE SURFACE’ KINGFISHER DIVING SCULPTURE
Breaking the Surface was sculpted for a vicarage in East Anglia, to stand in the water amongst reeds in a swimming pond. I have been experimenting with different uses of circles, whose shape represents a part of the ‘one world’ environmental/animal welfare messages I am exploring in my artwork. Circles are also innately beautiful. I wanted to get the sense of that incredible moment where the Kingfisher moves in a flash from the air to the water and I loved modelling the splash interrupting it, and bubbles trailing from the Diving Kingfisher’s wings.
This bronze Diving Kingfisher statue bears Tanya’s signature and unique edition number. Your casting of the Kingfisher sculpture will be personally approved and will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
10% of the proceeds from this bronze wildlife sculpture support the ‘David Shepherd Wildlife Trust’ animal charity.

This dynamic bronze Kingfisher statue is sculpted by artist Tanya Russell, who is well known for her life-like wildlife and animal sculptures. Tanya has a passion for improving the welfare of the animals she sculpts and 10% of all proceeds from the ‘Breaking the Surface’ Diving Kingfisher statue will go to the ‘David Shepherd Wildlife Trust’, a charity that fights for greater legal protection of endangered species.
The kingfisher is a limited edition sculpture, and your piece will be a superb recreation of the original sculpture, taken from a mould.
How The Sculpture Was Made
The Diving Kingfisher sculpture was modelled in wax, over a steel and aluminium armature for support. After the statue was finished a rubber mould was taken, with ‘keys’ placed in the rubber to ensure proper positioning. Then a shell of fibreglass was applied, to protect the mould and support it during the casting process.

The kingfisher “has worked its magic in finding where it should go just by joining us in the house and us looking at it. “…”It was so kind of Charles to bring it and I wish he had been able to bring you too but I suppose in a way he did because you are very present in the way you manage to enter into the work you do and I think that is through your love of the creatures you are making manifest.
