The Shorthorn Calf sculpture was made as a model for a commissioner, The Calf Club in Hemyock, Devon (UK), who were seeking to celebrate their centenary, by commissioning me to do a life-sized version of this calf in 2021.

In 1921, 19 teenagers joined a club that changed the face of farming in Britain. Not only did they help revolutionise milk production, the little Hemyock Calf Club also inspired the spread of young farmers clubs across Britain and abroad. Today there are nearly 600 clubs in England and Wales with 22,000 members, an achievement the Club is seeking to celebrate by commissioning me to do a life-sized calf based on this smaller sculpture!

This bronze Shorthorn Calf statue bears Tanya’s signature and unique edition number. Your casting of the Calf sculpture will be personally approved and will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

10% of the proceeds from this bronze animal sculpture support the All Creatures Great and Small animal charity.

Which Material to Choose

Bronze Resin – bronze metal powder is mixed with a resin to create the appearance of foundry bronze metal, but is more affordable and lightweight.

Foundry Bronze  – refers to the poured molten metal that is cast solid or hollow, depending on size, at a bronze foundry (using the traditional lost wax process). It is more robust and will appreciate in value.

Sculpture Description, Bases & Fixings

This adorable Shorthorn Calf statue is sculpted by artist Tanya Russell, who is well known for her life-like wildlife and animal sculptures. Tanya has a passion for improving the welfare of the animals she sculpts and 10% of all proceeds from the Calf statue will go to the ‘David Shepherd Wildlife Trust’, a charity that fights for greater legal protection of endangered species.

The Shorthorn Calf is an open edition sculpture, and your piece will be a superb recreation of the original bronze Shorthorn Calf sculpture from a mould.

If you would like this statue to be mounted on a stone or wooden base, please contact me for a quote.

How The Sculpture Was Made

The Shorthorn Calf sculpture was modelled in wax, over a steel and aluminium armature for support. After the statue was finished a rubber mould was taken, with ‘keys’ placed in the rubber to ensure proper positioning. Then a shell of fibreglass was applied, to protect the mould and support it during the casting process.
