SITTING PUGGLE SCULPTURE

“The Sitting Puggle statue was based on Pugs, who is the centre of her owners’ world. She is an elderly girl, with a few health issues who still brings huge joy to her family even as she is more confined to her home. Pugs visited me twice with her owners, and I couldn’t have had three lovelier visitors. She was hugely patient with her sitting, letting me take even the hardest measurements that some dogs refuse, while sitting in a lap, or wandering about in my studio. I feel privileged to have shared a little piece of all their lives together, and to have met Pugs, even in her twilight years – I know I’ll always remember her.”

This bronze puggle statue bears Tanya’s signature and unique edition number. Your casting of the Sitting Puggle sculpture will be personally approved and will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

Which Material to Choose

Bronze Resin – bronze metal powder is mixed with a resin to create the appearance of foundry bronze metal, but is more affordable and lightweight.

Foundry Bronze  – refers to the poured molten metal that is cast solid or hollow, depending on size, at a bronze foundry (using the traditional lost wax process). It is more robust and will appreciate in value.

This relaxed lifesized Sitting Puggle statue is sculpted by the artist Tanya Russell, who is the UK’s pre-eminent dog sculptor. Tanya has a passion for improving the welfare of the animals she sculpts and 10% of all proceeds from the pug beagle x statue will go to the ‘Dogs Trust’, a charity that provides sanctuary and rehoming services for dogs in the UK and also lobbies for welfare policy changes all over the world.

The Sitting Puggle is a limited edition sculpture, and your piece will be a superb recreation of the original clay puggle sculpture, taken from a mould. Your bronze dog sculpture can be cast in Bronze Resin or Foundry Bronze metal depending on which material you prefer.

How The Sculpture Was Made

Pugs visited me here at my studio to have her measurements and photos taken. When I model animals I try where possible to find examples from life. I also use many photos – often hundreds – showing the animal (and other animals of the breed or species). This helps me sculpt their anatomical features. I study the way that hair, fur or skin lies over their muscles or alters their shape, and their different poses and attitudes. Drawing on my research, I created an armature and sculpted the Sitting Puggle in clay.

Once I’d sculpted Pugs a rubber mould was taken, with ‘keys’ placed in the rubber to ensure proper positioning. Then a shell of fibreglass was applied, to protect the mould and support it during the casting process.
